Dobrich is a city with about 111,000 inhabitants. It is located in Southern Dobrudja, a region in north-eastern Bulgaria. Its name derives from the name of one of its ancient rulers - boyar Dobrotitza. Throughout the centuries it was also known as Hadjioglu Bazardjik (between the 15th and 19th Century) and Tolbukhin (1949-1991). Nowadays, Dobrich is a district centre and one of the biggest cities in north-eastern Bulgaria. Dobrich is known as the capital of ‘Golden Dobrudja’. It is 512 kilometres north east of the capital Sofia, and 37 kilometres south east of Yovkovo, the entrance point to the Romanian border. Furthermore, it is conveniently located only 30 kilometres from the Black Sea, close to a number of popular sea resorts including Albena, Kranevo, Golden Sands, Balchik, and Roussalka. Varna, a city of around 360,000 people, is approximately 50 kilometres away. |
