Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria, is situated at the foot of the Vitosha mountain. It lies in the Sofia Valley, which is surrounded by mountains on all sides. Sofia city is well known for its mineral and thermal springs. In fact, Sofia was settled by the Thracians during the 18th century BC because of the thermal springs. Sofia became an important town for the Romans, who named it Serdika. The town was subsquently renamed Sredets and finally, at the end of the 14th Century, it was named Sofia after the Goddess of Wisdom. The Iskar River flows through the eastern outskirst of Sofia. The famous Iskar Dam lies to the south of the city. Vitosha mountain is one of the main symbols of the city. This majestic mountain dominates the skyline as you drive around the Sofia ring road. Part of the mountain is a national park. The park encompasses the reserves of Bistrishko Branishte and Torfeno Branishte, in addition to the Boyana and Bistritza waterfalls.
