Sandanski itself is a quiet spa town of 32,000 people in the southwest corner of Bulgaria on the Bistritsa River. It is about an hour's drive from the golden beaches and warm blue waters of the Aegean Sea and forty minutes from the ski resort of Bansko. At 224 metres above sea level, it is situated at the foothills of the 2,900 metre Pirin Mountains, most of which are protected within the Pirin National Park. These granite mountains, ideal for summer hiking, are forested with Macedonian Pine, Bosnian Pine and Bulgarian Fir. They are home to almost 200 lakes and more than 1,300 species of plants.
