Five years ago, when we were looking for a property for ourselves, we were shown countless houses that were completely unsuitable and, in some cases, downright dangerous. We soon grew to realise that Bulgarian estate agents simply didn't understand what we want.

To a Bulgarian, a house in the countryside is a place where the "old people" live or somewhere to grow their vegetables. They love the idea of an apartment in the city, even if it means that they will have less space and nowhere for their kids to play. To us, a country cottage is where we can enjoy our retirement, potter around in the garden, enjoy the clean air and the laid-back lifestyle. It is a place of quietness and privacy, where our kids can play safely and happily and we can take endless walks in the countryside.

Obviously, we know just what features and facilities British people expect to find their homes. We also know how to convert rural houses to suit the British way of life. If an old cottage already has a bathroom and toilet inside the house, this is a real bonus, but more likely it hasn't. Our advice is usually spot-on and is given freely, but we can also arrange for bathroom and kitchen installations, double glazing, house remodelling and complete renovations - and all at a very low price.

Most village houses can be converted cheaply and easily. As home owners we have a lot of experience in changing the internal layout of country properties.
