The town of Aytos is located thirty kilometres northwest of Bourgas, and sits either side of the Aytos river. Aytos is the principal town in the municipality of Aitos, and it stands at the foot of Mount Aitos.
Despite the lack of ingenuity exhibited by those responsible for choosing place names in the region (which is called Aytos), this is a warm and friendly agricultural town with a pleasant atmosphere and a wonderful sense of community.
History buffs will be delighted to learn that Aytos contains the remains of three medieval turrets that once belonged to a fortress dating back to 650 AD (no prizes for guessing its name).
You will be fascinated to learn that the town's name is derived from the Greek word Aetos which means Eagle.
