The city and municipality of Blagoevgrad is situated in the southwestern corner of Bulgaria and has a population of around 75,000. The city is the economic and cultural centre of southwestern Bulgaria and is easily accessible, set on a major EU road between Sofia to the north, and Greece to the south.
The municipality of Blagoevgrad contains parts of all three of the most extensive Bulgarian mountain ranges, the Pirin, Rila and the Rhodope. The region is characterized by its beautiful landscapes and its abundance of interesting and rare plant and animal species.
