Dobrich is an up-and-coming city with about 111,000 inhabitants. It is located in Southern Dobrudja, a region that lies between Varna (to the south) and the Romanian border (to the north). The city is named after one of its ancient rulers - Boyar Dobrotitza.
Dobrich is a district centre and is known as the capital of 'Golden Dobrudja' - the fertile agricultural lands which make the area one of the biggest and most successful farming areas in Bulgaria. Dobrich is only 30 kilometres from the Black Sea Coast, and is close to the picturesque port of Balchik and beautiful beach resorts such as Albena, Kranevo, Golden Sands, Kavarna and Roussalka. The main road from Dobrich to Varna airport has been upgraded and improved, which makes Dobrich one of the most accessible cities in Bulgaria.
Dobrich is a small and friendly city, where the pace of life is slower and more relaxed than in the large cities of Sofia and Varna. It has a good selection of shops and restaurants, wide pedestrian areas with pavement cafes and it even has its own radio station - Radio Dobrudja! If you are looking for art and culture, visit the Art Gallery, the Historical Museum and the Ethnographic Museum, which is situated in a beautiful Bulgarian Renaissance building. There is also an ethnographic complex, "The Old Dobrich", which displays traditional arts and crafts, and an Archeological Museum. The city is famous for its open-air theatre (amphitheatre) and for the delightful city park.
Dobrich park is definitely one of the most attractive parks in Bulgaria, with lawns, flower beds, a lake, several children's playgrounds, a large cafe/restaurant that overlooks the tennis courts and a beautiful hotel complex constructed in traditional Bulgarian style. Unlike most parks in Bulgaria, the paths are not all constructed in straight lines - they twist and turn and cross over streams, in a similar manner to parks and formal gardens in the UK.
Dobrich is becoming the culinary centre of Bulgaria. The International University College attracts students from all over the world and offers professional courses in Hospitality and Hotel Management. Students can achieve Batchelor degress and MBAs that are awarded in conjunction with the University of Wales (Cardiff). The HRC Culinary Academy provides training in culinary arts to budding Head Chefs. It has its own restaurant in the university building - Talents Restaurant - which offers "fine dining" at low prices. Classes at the college can be taken in English.
The Central Market in Dobrich is the ideal place to buy local produce. The market stalls sell a huge variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. Situated around the edge of the market there are shops that sell fresh fish and meat, as well as clothes stores, shoe shops, furniture shops and many others.
