The Haskovo region is situated in the south-east part of Bulgaria. It borders both Greece and Turkey, and is the meeting point for two major international roads - one that connects Europe with Asia (and Sofia to Istanbul) and one that runs through Bulgaria, Romania and all the way to Northern Europe. The region is known as "Merlot country" as it produces 95% of the Merlot grapes in Bulgaria.
The city of Haskovo is a regional centre. The central part of the city has many beautiful old buildings. The city's most famous monument is the huge 32-metre high statue of the Virgin Mary (the protectress of the city) with the infant Jesus. It is the world's largest statue of Mary and Jesus. For those of you who are seeking culture, there is the newly-renovated Ivan Dimov Dramatic Theatre, a historical museum and an art gallery. In Kenana park, near Haskovo, the "Colourful Thrace Sings and Dances" folk festival is held every year.
The Haskovo Mineral Baths are located in the village of Mineralni Bani, which is 15 km west of the city. It has 12 mineral water springs with a temperature of 48.5°C. The mineral springs are used for the treatment of joint and bone disorders, as well as some gynaecological problems.
The Haskovo region is largely agricultural. Lush vegetation and gentle hills make it ideal for horse riding, pony trekking, walking and cycling. You can also fish or go boating in the lakes. The village of Mineralni Bani, in addition to its fame as a balneological resort, is the start point for many hiking tours which proceed along marked routes through the beautiful mountains of the Eastern Rhodopes.
