The merging of two small rivers that spring from the eastern Balkan Range - Luda (Little) Kamchia and Golyama (Big) Kamchia - forms the Kamchia River. Running down through the Balkan Range it meanders through unique woodland called Longoza and flows into the Black Sea.

The area around the mouth and lower course of the river is remarkable for its variety of habitats - unique flooded forests called Longoz, wide beaches with sand dunes and old riverbeds. The total area of the protected habitats in the reserve, together with Kamchia Sands Protected Area, adds up to 1.200 hectares. The area of the reserve is 842.1 hectares, some 764 hectares of which is forested. The reserve is under the protection of UNESCO.

The Longoz forests in the lower course of the river are the best representatives of their kind throughout Europe. The forests resemble a jungle, with creepers interweaving with the trees, or hanging down like thick drapes. Over 40 species of beautiful trees and many species of bushes grow in the forests. Ferns and red and yellow water lilies also grow there. There are 23 fish species found in the waters of the river and many deer and wild boars in the adjoining marshlands. However, Kamchia is most noted for its feathered inhabitants. It is an Important Bird Area (bird sanctuary) which is situated on the migratory flyway Via Pontica. This makes the area particularly suitable for the observation of various bird species that stop to rest and feed during migration.
