Kavarna is an attractive and peaceful resort on the northern Black Sea coast of Bulgaria. For many years, Kavarna town has been known as a centre for culture and music. On 1st July each year, people from all over Bulgaria travel to the coast to greet the first rays of the sun at the nature reserve of Kamen Bryag, near Kavarna (the July Morning Festival). Also, every summer the sports stadium at Kavarna is the venue for the famous Kaliakra Rock Festival.
Kavarna beach, which lies just outside the town of Kavarna, is a picturesque semi-circular bay. Towering over the beach are huge cliffs from which windsurfers ride the warm air currents as they glide gracefully across the sky. Scattered around the edges of the bay there are quaint restaurants where you can sit and gaze out across the calm waters of the Black Sea. Major investment continues to flood into the area. Their are plans to develop the small port of Kavarna into a modern and luxurious yachting marina, designed to attract the rich and famous. Top-class hotels and apartment complexes are already under construction.
To the north of Kavarna lie kilometres of undeveloped coastline, leading up to the Romanian border. Quiet, rocky coves (reminiscent of Cornwall in bygone days) are the landing places for local fishing boats. Long stretches of wild, open beaches, bordered by tall grass and wild flowers, bring to mind the Cumbrian coast.
The Kaliakra reserve, which is just north of Kavarna, is the place to go to watch dolphins, seals and cormorants. There are also the remains of a medieval fortress, including the fortified walls, water-mains and baths.
