Rousse Tourist Information

Rousse, or Russe, is a thriving city, situated on the Danube River. It has a well-estabalished university, where more than 6,000 students study a variety of subjects, including science and technology, the humanities, management and economics. Because of its neoclassical and baroque-style architecture the city of Rousse is also known as "Little Vienna". Many of the most beautiful buildings are concentrated in the area of the main plaza. Some of the most impressive buildings also overlook formal gardens that (in the summer) are full of colourful flowers such as tulips and violets. Pretty fountains decorate the parks and gardens and help to make Rousse one of the most interesting cities in Bulgaria.

Rousse Bridge

There are around 20 museums in the city of Rousse, including the Museum of Urban Life, which has an interesting collection of old costumes, furniture and other antiques. Other interesting features include:

• Liberty Square
• The Monument to Freedom
• Trinity Church
• The City Library

Rousse is the venue for a number of musical and art festivals , including the International Festival of Symphonic Music, the International Jazz Festival and the International Theatre Festival.

Within a short drive from Rousse you will find other areas of interest, including the Rousenski Lom Natural Park, the Rock Monastery of Saint Dimitar, the Ivanovo Rock Churches and the Basarbovski Rock Monastery. Bassarbovo Monastery is the only rock monastery in Bulgaria that is still in everyday use.
