The town of Vratsa is situated north of the Leva River and its beautiful gorge. Vratsa dates back to medieval times, when the original Vratitsa settlement was built. During the Turkish rule of Bulgaria, Vratsa acted as a defensive garrison. Vratsa itself is home to its own Museum of History which is located in the central square. Vratsa is widely known for its exhibitions, including Thracian treasures and samples from local goldsmith schools. Hristo Botev Tourist House, which is situated on the Kaleto Hill, is a lovely period house that was built during the late 1920s. It was funded by donations from tourists who visited Vratsa. In the Art Gallery you can see paintings and sculptures by famous Bulgarian artists, including Andrei Nikolov, St. Ivanov, Tseno Todorov, Ivan Funev and Pencho Georgiev.
The National park "Vrachanski Balkan" is one of the best areas in Bulgaria for caves and is very popular with rock climbers and speleologists (potholers). One of the most beautiful Bulgarian caves is the "Ledenika", which is named as a feature of international importance. In the winter this huge cave looks as if it is decorated in ice.
Other interesting places to visit include "Gods Bridge" - a natural bridge made of rock, Borovanska Mogila - an ancient Thracian fortress, and Skaklia - a huge waterfall that drops 141 metres.
