The city of Yambol (or Jambol) sits along both sides of the Tundja River. It is built on the site of a Roman fortress, although there are indications that there were settlements here in the neolithic, eneolithic and "bronze age" periods. There are still many indications of the Roman settlement, such as the 18th Century church of Saint George Church and the Roman Baths.
Yambol has several interesting sites of historical importance, including:
The Paparov Art Gallery is also worthy of a visit. The display includes a selection of paintings, sculptures and other art works, some of which is on sale to the public. Another place of interest is the Museum of History in Byalo More Street which has over 100,000 exhibits.
The Tundja River is a focal point in the city and there are plans to develop a range of river-based tourist activities. The river already offers a rowing lane and parts of the river are excellent for rafting. In the centre of the river there is an island which forms the city park.
