Driving to Bulgaria from the UK

You can drive freely and safely across mainland Europe to Bulgaria. If you are taking a pet with you, and you intend to return to the UK, you will need a Pet Passport. You should also keep within the EU boundaries. Our suggested route is:

  1. France
  2. Germany
  3. Austria
  4. Hungary
  5. Romania
  6. Bulgaria

If your destination lies in the south or west of Bulgaria, you might prefer to journey down into Italy, take the ferry across into Greece, and drive up from there.

Make sure that you fill up your petrol tank regularly, particularly as the evening draws close. In France, for example, some petrol stations are not manned overnight. Many UK credit and debit cards are not accepted by the petrol pumps there. If you run out of fuel on Saturday night, you can end up stranded until Monday morning!

Make sure that you have at least third party insurance cover for all countries that you visit. (It is probable that your existing car insurance will cover you for all EU countries, but check before you leave home.) You will need to pay road tax at the Romanian and Bulgarian borders.

Entry Requirements

If you are an EU citizen, you do not need a visa to enter Bulgaria. You will need to produce a passport that is valid for at least three months after your return. If you are not an EU citizen, please consult the consular section of the Bulgarian embassy in your own country, or contact us for advice.
